http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12490/7386125?cpt=8&wpid=2637 Fri, 13 Jul 2018 20:59:41 +0000 New Mazda-Toyota plant may threaten endangered species Work has temporarily stopped at the construction site of the Mazda-Toyota Manufacturing U.S.A. plant, because of a threatened species of fish. http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12490/7386125?cpt=8&wpid=2637 WAAY ABC Huntsville, AL new at four -- we're learning more about the fish that put the brakes on construction of the mazda toyota plant in huntsville annexed limestone county. thanks for joining us! i'm dan shaffer. and i'm demetria mcclenton.... today, we found the area where the one inch endangered "spring pygmy sunfish" blocked off. that's where waay 31's scottie kay is live after learning what makes this fish so important and what it needs to survive. dan, demetria.. as you can see the road here is blocked so we aren't able to get to exactly where the spring pygmy sunfish are located.. but we do know they only live in two places in the worldboth of those here in north alabama.. one not far behind me.. which is why some people are afraid the new mazda-toyota plant here will threaten the fish's habitat.. possibly causing it to become extinct. friday, the u.s. fish and wildlife service told me the spring pygmy sunfish is extremely unique, and requires a very specific environment to survive. that environment must include clean, clear, and cool flowing spring waterwhich is what we would find right near the construction site of the mazda-toyota plant. this is what it looked like in 2013 when a petition was filed to list the fish as an endangered species. according to the fish live in a small pond off of powell road, and are a part of the beaver dam spring and creek complex. the center for biological diversity believe developmental activities like the mazda-toyota plant pose a real threat to the quality of surrounding waters. they say it could harm or kill the spring pygmy sunfish.. and also harm the vegetation in the water the fish need for food and survival purposes.. such as hiding from predators. toyota announced on thursday it will temporarily stop groundwork on the new plant to do an additional survey to ensure the sunfish are protected. those with the center for biological diversity say they look forward to seeing the results of the ongoing survey.. and they say they hope the appropriate measures are taken to keep the fish from becoming extinct. reporting in madison county, sk, waay
