http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12487/6923059?cpt=8&wpid=2637 Thu, 18 May 2017 22:59:55 +0000 Report looks at the effect lodging has on Joplin economy Report looks at the effect lodging has on Joplin economy http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12487/6923059?cpt=8&wpid=2637 KODE the case. travelers spend hundreds of billions of dollars finding a place to stay every year. and a new report says joplin hotels are doing a better job of attracting that business. action 12's gretchen bolander joins us live in the newsroom. gretchen, what's the change? andy, joplin saw more money spent on hotel nights in the past few months, a double digit increase. cecil graves, traveler: "we came up to see the great grandsons." gretchen bolander: cecil graves has a long drive home ahead of him. after spending a night or two in southwest missouri, he's heading back to south texas. cecil graves: "the interstate's always busy." and there are more and more of those highway drivers stopping at joplin hotels. the city saw a big increase in the second quarter months of february, march and april, more money spent than the first quarter or the year before.(traffic sounds) mike greninger works at the la quinta on south range line and says he only expects that trend to grow. mike greninger, la quinta inn: "normally the summer months, there's just more people traveling with the area, i-49 and i-44, we tend to draw a lot of buzz from those two interstates." there are corporate bookings, which fill rooms year round, and some special occasions like marian days in carthage which max out all area hotels.mike greninger, la quinta inn: "and the summer months, there's just more people traveling for various reasons from vacations to class reunions, weddings, sporting tournaments, uh just a lot more activity." joplin logged a 55 percent increase in hotel/motel sales in the second quarter versus a nearly 30 percent drop in the first. so part of the increase could be how those sales were filed. regardless, andy, local workers are hopeful the boost will mean a busy summer for 2017. thanks,
