Vangent Appoints R. Nicholas Burns to Serve on Board of Directors
Former U.S. Ambassador Brings More Than 27 Years of Foreign Service and International Expertise to Vangent Board

Ambassador Burns will join other members serving on the Board of Directors of Vangent, Inc. including Chairman of the Board Robert B. Nicholas Burns is currently Professor of the Practice of Diplomacy and International Politics at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Kennedy School's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.
He is Senior Counselor at the Cohen Group. He is also Director of the Aspen Strategy Group and a member of the Board of Directors of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the Atlantic Council, the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress, the Richard Lounsbery Foundation, the Center for a New American Security and the Appeal of Conscience Foundation.
Burns served as Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs from 2005-2008 until his retirement after twenty-seven years in the United States Foreign Service. He also served as U.S. Ambassador to NATO (2001-2005), U.S. Ambassador to Greece (1997-2001) and as State Department Spokesman for Secretaries of State Madeleine Albright and Warren Christopher (1995-97). Prior to that, he served for five years at the White House (1990-95) as a member of the National Security Council staff on Soviet and then Russian affairs.
Burns began his Foreign Service career in the Middle East, where he was Vice Consul and Staff Assistant to the Ambassador in Egypt (1983-85) and then Political Officer at the American Consulate General in Jerusalem (1985-87) where he coordinated economic assistance to the Palestinian population in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
Burns has a BA in History from Boston College in 1978 and an MA in International Relations from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (1980).
